Where are the Natives

I was walking home from work when I decided to drop by Abanao Square to buy a mechanical pencil at National Bookstore. I don't usually listen to other peoples conversation but this time it's special.

I overheard some local tourist talking about the natives. I heard one ask a fellow shopper where to find the natives? I wonder what kind of native she is talking about but since they are in the city of pines I assume she was talking about the Igorots. The lady said if you are talking about the Igorot you are looking at one of them. That puts a smile in my face, but then the girl who asked  gave a reaction I don't know if I'm going to slap her in the face or pity her for her ignorance, I choose the later though.

The girl said.. WEHHHH HINDI NGA! Bakit maputi ka, dibah pangit sila? (Really, then why do you have a fair skin, isn't it that they are ugly) Unconsciously I tried to find a thing where I can see my reflection.
This is what we wear before

I do understand those people who are still not aware of the so called modern world, stuck with what they know, I admire them though for being bold.

This is what we wear now....
(I would like to thank my sis for letting me use her pictures)

We were not stuck with what we use to do, we also follow the flow of things around us but it doesn't mean we forgot who we are. We are still Igorot the warrior of the north. We still practice the old ways but we accept the new.

I am proud of my roots I am proud to be an Igorot :)

  1. I consider it racist though. Why stereotype a race? The problem is that people stuck with the traditional description of a particular race. The world is evolving, and so are the Igorots..

  3. Aww. They are very rude but I think they need someone to explain that Igorots are good and so are you. :)

  5. Spell RUDE and uneducated -- the nerve of that person! It's cruel enough that she's classified Igorots as 'pangit'... that's way below the belt. I mean, look at Kidlat Tahimik. That man is a genius and one handsome fellow! I've met him and have hung out with his kids, and they've been really awesome people. It's such a shame that she had to stereotype Igorots.

  7. Tsktsk beauty is in the eye of the beholder, well that's how far that saying goes and I believe in it. We can't blame that person for saying what she thinks outwardly and too honestly. We all have judgments though only stuck at the back of our minds. We are also guilty of regarding people as "less beautiful" than the others. So I think the only "wrong" thing is how she said it.

  8. Rudeness to an A.. sobra naman yung girl na yun. I am proud to say I have an Igorot nieces and nephews and they go with the tide. Kung ano uso, meron sila.

  9. What she did was plain rude and reveals her ignorance of the changing times. The same line of thought describing Igorots as dark-skinned is common in books but ugly has never been used to describe them.

    1. well I guess because most of us would think that dark people are ugly... thats the reason why dark=ugly to some.

  10. What a rude lady! If I was there, I would really put her in her place! The problem with us is that we always cry that Americans and other foreigners are racists but we are also racists among our kababayans! What a pity. That girl really is very ignorant :/

  11. Hahahahahaha.... so funny..... Where are the natives??? You are beautiful so darn... Where are the natives?

Part of my ancestry is American Indian and my mother in law always thought Indians had red or purple skin. I am very, very fair skinned. One year we all traveled to Canada from the US on a fishing tour with our men. She had heard about their being indians in Canada and was afraid they would attack. That is when I told her I was american Indian. LOL... guess you had to be there but she must have watched to many westerns on TV.

  17. What!!!! Asking something really bad in such a petty way!!!! these things makes me really sad :( ;(, you should have asked why she is wearing clothes instead of leaves because 170000 years ago there were no clothes to wear. This is not racism and stereotypical at all, they are mentally ill frustrated beings. :(
